In 1894, Oscar Hammerstein I erected the first theater in what was an undeveloped part of the city known for stables and blacksmith shops. Soon many other developers followed and by 1930 there were over 90 theaters in this neighborhood. It was the largest concentration of legitimate theaters in the world.
